Pretty Easy Break Time

Hello! If you’ve been reading so far you know how much I enjoy sharing my thoughts and tips with you. I’ve also mentioned boundaries and avoiding burnout. For this reason, PrettyEasyFancy will be taking a monthlong break and returning in February 2025! I look forward to talking to you all then. In the meantime, check out some of my favorite websites for reading and lifestyle material:

  • Refinery29.com- In particular I enjoy reading the Money Diaries section. Here you can see how other women choose to spend their time and money over the course of a week. They also have shopping, beauty and self-care articles that are published often. For more content you can also switch the country at the top to view their UK or Australian sites (or French or German if you speak those languages!)

  • Apartmenttherapy.com- I absolutely love this apartment for design tips. It really helps me figure out how to maximize the space I have in my small NYC apartment.

  • IntotheGloss.com- This website has a focus on beauty but also features articles that showcase various artists (who knew Ming Lee Simmons was so interesting?).

Let me know what you plan on doing next month in the comments below! See you next year!

Easy Lunch Prep

Hello again! Have you ever tried meal prepping? It can save you a lot of time during the workweek (and the weekend!) Read on for some meal prep tips from a gal who does not know how to cook…

Getting Started

  • To start prepping, make sure you have enough containers to hold your food. This will save you money over disposable options. I like to use glass containers; I’ve had this set from Ikea for several years. They are dishwasher safe and stack well. You also don’t have to worry about them being stained.

  • It’s also great to invest in a set of reusable utensils like this adorable terrazzo set from W&P. Rinse them well at work to avoid festering smells in your lunch bag.

  • Speaking of lunch bags, here’s an adorable corduroy one. Keep napkins in the large front pocket so they’re right where you need them.

  • Don’t forget a bottle of hand sanitizer and a small packet of floss picks.

Meal Ideas

Great meals are a balanced mix of protein, carbs and fats to give you long-lasting energy at work without making you sleepy. Try these simple recipes.

Tuna Wraps

Ingredients

Want to add something sweet to finish the meal? Try a cup of dry breakfast cereal! It’s low in calorie and has a satisfying crunch. My favorite are Honeycomb and Oreo O’s. Another option if you are still a little hungry later in the afternoon is to pack a Greek yogurt like Chobani Flip. They come in a bunch of interesting flavors with toppings to mix into the yogurt; try Cookie Dough or Peanut Butter Cup.

Meal-prepping has become very popular for a reason. There’s no need to waste energy going and buying food every day when you can stock up on a few ingredients to have on hand all the time. Bon appétit!

Have you tried meal-prepping? How did it go? Let me know in the comments below!

Pretty Jeans

Hi there! Are you in the market for a new pair of jeans? Interested in trying some of the newer styles on the market? Read on for denim inspiration…

What’s Your Style?

If you’re a woman of a certain age like myself, you’ve probably lived through a few different denim trends. Low-rise jeans were very in style when I was in high school and they just didn’t work for my body type. I’ve discovered that with a smaller waist-to-hip ratio I look a lot better in high-waisted styles. If you have more of an athletic build, you may find straight or wide-legged jeans to be flattering. How about apple shapes? Look into bootcut or flared jeans.

Women’s clothing can be frustrating since sizing isn’t completely standard. To discover which pairs look best on your body, take a day and go try on multiple pairs. I like to do this in spring or summer because I can just wear a loose sundress that’s easy to change in and out of. Take photos in the dressing room and crowdsource opinions with your friends. Once you have a general idea of the style you like, try it on at different stores. It also helps to take your measurements if you need to shop online instead. Find the ‘size chart’ and then filter the site by the size that is closest to your measurements. Some sites even allow you to change the look of the model to one that looks more like you!

Where to Find Them

  • Low-Rise Jeans are my old nemesis, but I won’t judge if that’s what you’re looking for. Try a wide-legged pair to update this look, and pair with a fitted top or bodysuit like these. Add a pair of chic flats and a blazer to take the outfit from day to night.

  • High-Waisted jeans can be incredibly flattering (avoid if you are short waisted or very petite; they could make your legs look shorter). Look for pairs listed as ‘mom jeans’ for more options, like these. These usually skew a bit more casual. Pair them with some classic Chuck Taylors and a red lip.

  • Interested in trying a straight style? Try these. They have built in shaping technology and a gap-proof waistband. I’d add some adorable Chelsea boots and a crisp white button down.

  • Lastly, let’s talk about bootcut and flared styles. These vary in width depending on the look you’re going for. How about this pair of kick flare jeans. They’re a great way to ease into this style. Try flats with these to leave the attention on the fun hem.

How to Save

  • Looking for a good deal on denim? My favorite trick is to use Rakuten. Type in exactly what you’re looking for (ex: women’s jeans) and the website will tell you where to get additional discounts that you can stack with any sales from the store.

  • Sign up for promotional emails, particularly during certain sale periods. You’ll get first crack at inventory when prices drop.

  • Add items to your cart online but don’t buy them right away. Sometimes this strategy will prompt the company to send you an email offering a discount (be sure to have signed up for emails first so they have your contact information).

  • Buy pre-owned. If you want a specific style of jean and you know how it fits already, try getting a gently used pair. On thredup.com I typed in ‘women’s jeans’ and found pairs going for as low as $5! Great for purchasing backup pairs.

  • Swap with friends! This is a fun way to refresh your wardrobe. See if any friends wear the same size and have them over to trade pairs you’re not wearing anymore for ones you might.

Where did you find your favorite pair of jeans? Let me know in the comments below!

Fancy Sick Days

Hey there! I recently had two wisdom teeth removed and let me tell you, I am not feeling my best. It made me think: how could I make this experience more pleasant? Read on to see what you can do to elevate your next sick day.

Vibes

Ugh, is there anything worse than a messy home? If you’re feeling unwell, the first step to recovery is a bit of tidying. I know this sounds insane, but even something as small as picking up all the tissues you’ve strewn around can make the space seem a little more inviting and conducive to healing. You might also add something like a scented candle or incense. My favorite sick day candle is one that’s a little mysterious and woodsy, like this one by Threshold. I also wear my coziest sweats, which are currently these by H&M. You can also add a cute turban to keep your hair looking nice; these are adorable and you can even wear them out of the house. Next, snuggle up in a cozy blanket like this one (pro tip: search for one at Nordstrom Rack or a similar discount outlet before you pay full price).

How about watching a feel-good 90s movie? My top picks for sick days are nostalgic ones like “While You Were Sleeping” or “You’ve Got Mail”. Bonus points for a film you’ve seen multiple times, so if you fall asleep it’s no big deal.

Next, try turning off your phone and picking up a book. I love using my Kindle for days like this- long battery life, lightweight and holds about a billion books. I love downloading a library book (who says being sick has to be expensive) and taking my mind off how I feel by diving into it. Try using Libby with your city’s library to get started (note: you don’t have to actually own a Kindle to use it).

Healing

So, what type of sick are you? Stomachache? Flu? The dreaded COVID? Check with your doctor before taking any supplements, but here are some of my favorite home remedies depending on what’s wrong with me.

Headaches usually require a good long nap. I also like to use a gel migraine eye mask like this one. I keep it in the freezer for emergencies and it’s a great non-medicated option.

Stomachaches are a giant pain. How about trying a cup of yummy Lemon Ginger Probiotic tea? It takes about four minutes to brew and can help settle your stomach quickly.

Flu/COVID- Talk to your doctor about medical interventions to lessen your symptoms. Besides that, steamy showers can help you breathe. Try using these Vicks shower steamers for a hit of menthol. It’s also important to drink a ton of water. My favorite water bottle right now is the HydroJug. It holds 73 ounces and can go in the dishwasher. You can also get a sleeve for it that has clips for a carrying strap and a little pocket to hold essentials. I’ve had two of these for years. They’ve come in clutch during my wisdom tooth recovery since I can’t drink from a straw.

Food

What are some low-key options for sick day meals? Try the obvious, soup. I love this one from Trader Joe’s- Organic Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper. Another fave if you want something more traditional is the Progresso Chicken Noodle. I prefer their thick spiral noodles. If you want something more substantial, I like to make a frozen pizza. But not just any- this bougie California Pizza Kitchen one. It’s made with four cheeses and has excellent flavor. However, if you’re having trouble keeping heavy foods down, you can’t go wrong with Cream of Wheat. I elevate it slightly by using unsweetened vanilla almond milk and I add a sprinkle of coconut sugar just before serving.

After Healing

Have a goal for something fun to do once you’re feeling better! It could be as simple as a trip to the mall or a nice walk in the park. After all, once you’ve rested up it’s best to get back outside and restart your routine as soon as you can. I hope you aren’t feeling poorly for long, my friend.

Easy Boundaries

Hello! This post is one that a lot of us struggle with. Today we’ll discuss how to set and enforce boundaries in different aspects of life (work, family and relationships). You’ll learn how to use one of the shortest and most important sentences there is: No. Let’s dive in!

First, though, you may be wondering why you find it so difficult to set boundaries. Are you someone who is a dedicated people-pleaser? That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s great to be kind and helpful when possible. But this can also swiftly lead to burnout. You can’t do absolutely everything all the time. So read on to discover ways to set boundaries while still remaining polite and pleasant.

Work

  • Does your boss message you at all hours of the day? What should you do? First, find out what your boss’s expectations actually are. Do they expect an immediate response? More importantly, are they entitled to it? If the answer is no to both, schedule a meeting with your boss during work hours. Explain that while you understand there are time-sensitive aspects to your position, your time off is valuable and actually enables you to recharge and return a refreshed, more productive employee. Reinforce this by using the ‘Do Not Disturb’ setting on your phone and email. You can tailor it to a set time (I use mine to ensure I am off limits from Friday 5PM til Monday 8AM). If this doesn’t work, go up the ladder to HR and reference your actual job requirements.

  • How do your coworkers treat you? Are they gossipy or unkind? It’s ok to not make friends at work. Everyone is there because they’re being paid. It doesn’t mean that you can’t still set a good example of being polite and minding your own business. Take a moment throughout the day to stop and consider how you’re feeling. Are your coworkers making you feel better or worse than when you arrived? If it’s the latter, try to figure out why. Gossip can be stopped with a simple “while that’s interesting, I think I’d better get back to work. I’ve got some things I am obsessed with finishing before I leave for the day”. Unkindness can be neutralized with a quiet smile; don’t repay bad with bad.

Family

  • This is a tricky one! We don’t get to choose who we end up being related to, but we do get to choose how we navigate our relationships with them. How do your family members treat you in general? Do you find yourself getting roped into attending events when you don’t want to or running errands for people who could probably handle them on their own? Practice saying no without giving too much detail. “I won’t be able to help with this one” or “I don’t have space for that task in my calendar” are great. You aren’t giving an opening for them to counter-offer and, most importantly, you don’t have to.

  • Are your family members prone to using unkind language with you? “I’m not going to talk to you until you can respond respectfully” and “It really hurts when you talk to me this way” can get them to think about their own behavior and how it affects you. Note: this might not change the way they act, but at least you can set a firm boundary and stick to it. If you get to the point of blocking someone it feels painful, but being berated can affect your mental health very quickly.

Relationships

  • These might be the hardest to set boundaries in. Have you considered setting boundaries for yourself rather than someone else? For example, if you find yourself in a relationship that has run its course, it’s possible you need to decide what you will or will not tolerate. “I don’t like the way I feel when you do this” or “It’s urgent that we talk about our communication” are useful starters. You should speak openly about your feelings before they bubble up like a volcano.

  • Sometimes our relationship problems stem from something the other person can’t actually fix. If you have trust issues or unresolved trauma, ensure there is a boundary in place to stop these from ruining your relationship. Try these: “I realize that it’s irrational to need to know where you are at all times. If you could check in at some point during the day I’d feel much better” or “I’ve been snapping at you so much lately. I think it’s time I start going to therapy again before this gets out of control”.

Did you enjoy learning some ways to set boundaries? Have you had to do this lately? Let me know in the comments!

Easy Checkups

Hi again! Hope you had a restful weekend. One thing I like to do during my days off is what I call ‘life admin’. This means that I look over potential projects and unfinished business that needs sorting out. An example of this is scheduling appointments and doing regular maintenance. Today we’ll briefly discuss some things you should be getting checked out and how often. Need help with scheduling these things? Read on!

Health & Wellness

  • Annual Physical Exam- First of all, do you have a primary care doctor? It’s common for people to no longer have a trusted family physician who knows their entire extended clan. We move, we need specialists, we just don’t follow up. Whatever the reason, this is something you shouldn’t skip. A lot of potential health issues can be caught early if you see your doctor every year for a general checkup. How do you know if your baseline has changed if you don’t know what it is in the first place? For help finding a good primary care physician, try calling the helpline on the back of your insurance card. You can also ask a trusted friend who they’re currently seeing.

  • Annual Gynecologist Exam- Yes it can be uncomfortable and awkward. But women’s health is complex and it’s great to stay on top of any changes, particularly as you age. I’ve mentioned Tia clinic before and I truly believe they’re nailing the concept of all-inclusive women’s healthcare. Pro tip: you can also see a primary and mental health care provider here.

  • Twice-Yearly Dental Exams- Your teeth aren’t just luxury bones. They’re vital. Keep them in tip-top shape by seeing your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and to address any concerns. In between visits, maintain your dental hygiene by brushing and flossing daily.

  • Yearly Eye Exam- Be sure to find a good optometrist who takes their time with your exam. They can find other health issues linked to your eyes like high blood pressure. Too busy to look around much? I love Warby Parker; S and I have had great experiences with their chain of stores.

Home Maintenance

  • Smoke detectors- When’s the last time you checked these to ensure they are functioning? You should be testing them monthly. It’s worth the time to make sure you’re safe.

  • Water filters- If you use a water filter like a Brita, check the packaging. At minimum you should replace them every two months.

  • Coffee machine descaling- For the freshest coffee, descale your Keurig or Nespresso machine every 3 months or 300 capsules. You can find descaling kits on Amazon or straight from the manufacturer.

  • Air Purifier- Keep a close eye on this. Clean air makes a massive difference. The model we have is the Germ Guardian and the filters last several months before they need to be replaced. It has a handy light that tells you when you’ll need to do so.

Car Maintenance

  • Oil changes- Of course this varies widely depending on what and how often you drive. For our HR-V that is not driven often we usually just change it when the car tells us to. But this is usually every 7,500 miles or six months.

  • Registration and Inspection- Does your state require both of these? Set an alarm in your phone for the month before it’s due so you have plenty of time to schedule it.

  • Windshield wipers- These should be replaced every 6 to 12 months. How long have you had yours?

  • Other maintenance- Check your car’s manual to see if there’s anything else you should check on regularly. Some are preventative repairs that can save you a lot of money in the long run. You should also be sure to read any and all recall notices you get- some are serious and must be addressed immediately.

Did this post remind you to take care of something or add it to your calendar? Are there any other yearly/monthly/weekly tasks you complete? Let me know in the comments below!

Pretty Hair

Hello again! Have you been looking for some new hair products? Bored with your current style or regimen? Read on for some of my favorite hair care products and tools.

Hair Tools

  • I recently simplified all the different tools I use and purchased the Shark FlexStyle. This is a fancy blowdryer that also has curling and round brush attachments that snap on easily. It’s very lightweight and fast. One caveat is that it’s quite loud but you won’t be using it nearly as long as a typical blowdryer since it’s so efficient. It has so many functions and can be used for various hair types. I usually start by rough-blow drying my hair to about 80% and then using the round brushes to finish off the style. I also bought a case for it on Amazon that’s padded so I don’t have to worry about the different attachments bouncing around.

  • Another favorite is my Vanessa Pro Flat Iron. I’ve had this for over three years and it’s very reliable. It heats up quickly and glides smoothly over my hair. You can use it for straightening, curling, you name it. Proof that you don’t have to spend a ton to get decent hot tools.

  • For detangling I cannot live without my Denman brush. I have the large 9-row styling brush and it’s great for use on wet hair. You can also use it to quickly detangle and style dry hair. Would you believe I invested in this brush 8 years ago and it’s still going strong? Quality product that I highly recommend.

  • My favorite paddle brush is the Dryer Super Lemon Drop, and its little son the Lil’ Lemon Drop. The bright yellow color is fun and it makes the tiny one easier to find in the depths of your purse. I use both for wrapping my hair before bed.

  • Have you ever tried wearing a satin lined cap to bed? It’s great for retaining moisture and preserving your style. It also helps save your hair from being damaged by rubbing against your pillowcase.

Hair Products

  • My favorite shampoo and conditioner set, it sounds CRAZY, is Herbal Essences Color Me Happy. It's super cheap, lathers beautifully, leaves my hair soft and smells incredible. They revived the entire Herbal Essences line from back in the day and I’ve welcomed it with open arms.

  • Chi Silk Infusion is such a throwback too, but it keeps my hair shiny so I still add a dime sized amount to wet hair. You may also want to enter the new millennium and use Moroccanoil Treatment. I like to use this on my baby hairs and also add a teensy amount after I’m done blowdrying.

  • Cake Beauty The Hold Out Hairspray smells like lemon cake. It doesn’t leave my hair stiff; in fact the can even suggests you use it as a hair perfume.

  • Do you like a slick back bun? Try Murray’s EdgeWax to make it as smooth as possible. Has no smell and has never once flaked on me.

  • Rosemary oil is great for hair health (Of course, check with your doctor before adding any supplements or herbs to your daily regimen). I like to use just a few drops and massage into my scalp.

Finishing Touches

  • Kitsch is my go-to for spiral hair ties. Theirs last way longer than other brands before they stretch out. These won’t leave you with a dent in your hair when you take out your ponytail.

  • They also make massive scrunchies that won’t damage your hair because they’re satin. Try using them for your next bun!

  • As a millennial, I feel naked without a hair tie around my wrist. These ones by Goody are my go-to. They never stretch out and they have a very secure hold.

  • Having a medium hair day? Try these adjustable head wraps. You can tie them however you like so they won’t leave a dent or cause damage.

What’s your favorite hair product? Have you already used any of the ones in this post? Let me know in the comments below!

Fancy Cats

Hi there! Today I wanted to share a few of my favorite things I’ve purchased for my two cats, Oliver and Monkey. Do you have a cat or maybe a friend with one? Then read on to find out what you might be missing. Let’s dive in!

Food

My cats love the Applaws wet cat food because it’s tasty. I love it because it’s got all natural ingredients I can actually recognize like tuna, salmon and rice. They also eat the Royal Canin Sensitive Digestion dry cat food. Our older cat Monkey has an occasional sensitive tummy so it’s easy to give both of them the same thing. Our youngest Oliver (“Ollie”) doesn’t mind it either.

To dispense their food we use the Pet Libro automatic feeder. It comes with a convenient app and will alert you when their food levels are low. You can easily change the amounts and frequency of their food and it tells you when it successfully dispensed, giving you peace of mind.

For treats, we like to give Monkey Sentry calming chews because she’s easily agitated. Speak with your vet first about giving these. They’re weight based so pay attention to the label. Ollie prefers Temptation cat treats in any flavor; the fishier the better! We dispense these treats via the Owlet pet camera when we are out of town. This allows us to see the cats and talk to them (two way audio and one-way video via an app!).

Litter

We use Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract litter. It seems to cause less dust and spreading than other brands I’ve tried. The only downside is that it comes in a massive 40-lb bag that’s hard to lift. I store it in a rolling bin that makes it easier to move between the two litterboxes when it’s time to add more. Speaking of litter boxes, I have one Modkat Flip box that I love. We find it very easy to clean this box due to the removable liner. We also have a plain box with a high back to go inside our litter box furniture. This piece of furniture fits into our living room decor so well. People can’t even tell what’s inside!

To manage their litterbox deposits we have one Litter Genie by each box. This is genius because you don’t have to constantly run to throw out mini bags of waste. It’s easy to get set up and doesn’t need any power source. The refills can be purchased on Amazon or Chewy and last ages.

Water

We use a fountain for their water. We’ve had this Eufy model for over a year and it’s incredibly easy to keep clean. All the elements come out for scrubbing. Best of all, the motor is in the base so it doesn’t ever get close to water. You can get refills for the filters very inexpensively on Amazon. Our cats drink way more water from this than they ever did from their dishes.

Around the House

We have a couple of these self-warming mats for our cats to lay on. They’re so cozy and soft and perfect for naps. They also love to scratch things to sharpen their claws. We’ve installed this scratching pole on a corner of the living room entryway for them to use. You can also find the refills on Amazon. It doesn’t get in the way like a traditional pole.

For the occasional light mess like a hairball, we love the Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover. Heavier ones are always quickly removed by our Bissell Stain Eraser Power Brush. Words cannot describe my love for this machine. It gets out every single mess, every time and doesn’t leave our rugs sopping wet.

Easy Low Energy Days

Hi there! Ever wondered how you can still have a good day when you have nothing in the tank? Read on to see some tips on how to feel productive even if you’re absolutely exhausted. I promise this one will be very short so as not to take too much effort to digest.

Check In With Yourself

How are you feeling? It might be a good time to do a simple mindfulness exercise. Are you sleepy? Maybe ten more minutes of snoozing can help the rest of your day get back on track. Are you thirsty? Have a large glass of water- not too cold so as to ease you into the day. Hungry? How about an easy meal of something like yogurt or fruit (nothing that needs to be chopped; think banana for this one). Mad? If something is still bothering you from yesterday, consider writing a journal page on it to help you process your emotions.

Plan Your Day

What can be skipped today? Is there anything you can move to a day when you have more energy? For things that can’t be missed, can you ask for help or change the intensity? As an example, if you need to go grocery shopping because you don’t even have the aforementioned banana, can you order those groceries online and have them delivered versus getting dressed and driving to the store? Try making a list of things that simply must be done today, even before getting out of bed. That way you know what you’re getting up to do.

Shower and Brush Your Teeth

The bare minimum must be done. Sometimes just getting water involved can help wake up a tired mind and body. Today is not a day for washing hair and doing complicated skincare routines. Think bar soap and a messy bun.

Talk to Someone

This can help get you out of this low energy funk. Based on your check-in earlier, is your lack of energy caused by something physical that you can change? That’s great! Is it mental? This can also be solved but it may take more time. Either way, let someone know how you’re feeling today. This could be a trusted friend or a mental health professional. You don’t have to get through this day alone.

Do Something That Makes You Happy

What does this look like? It’s different for everyone. Maybe you’d like to watch an old movie. Or take a stroll through a nearby park. Even just flipping through a glossy magazine. Try to fit in something to lift your spirits today, especially if it doesn’t take up more energy.

Check In Again

At the end of this low energy day (which might be quite early if you need to go to bed sooner than usual), check in once more. How many of these tips were helpful? Were you able to rally? If not, don’t consider the day a total loss. You learned that sometimes you just need a bit more rest. Being kind to yourself is always a win, in my book.

Have you had a low-energy day recently? What did you do? Have you tried any of the suggestions above? Let me know in the comments below.

Easy Productivity

Hello my friends! Today I thought I’d address something that happens to the best of us from time to time: just feeling like you need to get it together. A full life overhaul. Do you notice that you have that one acquaintance that is always on time, has their hair perfectly groomed and is dressed properly for the weather and the event you’re attending? If that is literally never you, read on for some tips to live your best life.

Punctuality

Oh boy. This is tough for some people. I have a serious aversion to being late. It’s stressful, everyone’s looking at you and you feel a little nauseous and sweaty. But it doesn’t have to be like that! Here are some tips I use to get where I’m going on time

  • Plan ahead. It sounds simple but how is it done? First, make good use of a calendar. I do use the stock one on my iPhone, but I also use the GoodNotes app. I like to handwrite my calendars using one of their blank templates. You can also get fancier by purchasing various other calendars (usually less than $10 and they have a lot of cute themes). I recommend buying an undated one if you go this route so you can use it for multiple years. Put anything that must be done on your calendar. Don’t leave it up to chance.

  • Give yourself plenty of time. I live in NYC. I take transit most of the time and it can be extremely unreliable (ex: I just checked, and there are currently delays on three different subway lines and a whole mess of other service changes like skipping stations). I know that I can’t trust the Apple Maps estimate of how long it will take to get somewhere, so I just pad my time. If the app says 30 minutes, I give myself 45. This way I don’t have to instantly freak out if my train is running a little late.

  • Do some research. Is this your first time going to a particular destination? Why not look it up. Is there parking? Is there a certain code to enter the building? Do you have to get a visitor’s pass? All of these things will take extra time, and if you didn’t plan for them it will stress you out and potentially make you late. If this is for a job interview it could mean you will miss out on the opportunity. Doctor’s appointment? Enjoy paying a late fee or possibly being forced to reschedule. If you are like me and absolutely terrible with directions, you might also want to use the “Look Around” feature on maps to see what the building and nearby landmarks look like. Jot down anything relevant or put it in a digital note on your phone. This way you won’t waste time digging through your inbox for some obscure piece of information you’ll need upon arrival.

  • Lay out your clothes. This is a big time-waster first thing in the morning. Many find that they spend ages rushing around trying to decide on an outfit. I do the opposite and make sure everything is set out for me to grab and go, right down to socks and shoes. This may require some forethought (where are you going the next day? Will you need to change clothes more than once?) but it’s worth the effort. You might even get to sleep later.

Having What You Need

  • Would you like to know how to have a bag that contains everything you need for your daily travels? Check out my “what’s in my bag” blog, posted a few weeks back. But also consider where you go and what you do on a normal day. Is there usually a big swing in temperatures? Be sure to include a scarf or sweater that you can don or remove at a moment’s notice. It’s best to choose a neutral color for this one, like a classic black cashmere. This Mongolian cashmere wrap from Quince goes almost everywhere with me. Do you want to bring a water bottle? This might save you money and time since you don’t have to try to find a convenience store. Are you prone to sniffles? Get a multipack of tissues and put one in every bag. If you see someone else with an interesting item as part of their daily carry, make a note and try it out for yourself (ex: a purse hook so you end the conundrum of where to place your bag when out to eat).

  • How do you avoid running out of things at home and at work? Try using a subscription. For example, if you know you are going to use hand soap every single day at home, use Amazon’s Subscribe and Save feature to purchase it. First decide how often you need it. You can search your purchase history to see when you’re buying hand soap. Is it every two months like clockwork? Great, set up your subscription to deliver it a couple of days before you run out. Amazon will even remind you when it’s close to the the time your item will be delivered just in case you don’t need it (or want it earlier). You can use this for things like grocery items, personal care, clothing and more. This saves you from frenzied trips to the grocery store on days you really need to spend that time doing something else.

  • Buy travel-sized backups of your favorite items. Just in case you do run out, you’ll at least have enough to get you through a day or two until you can purchase more.

  • Watch for sales. Don’t ignore the promotional emails you get. It could be that the very item you’ve had your eye on will be reduced in price enough to buy two! I do this sometimes with things like pants; I rarely find ones that fit so when I do I purchase multiples. Why not have a backup?

  • Use your phone’s calendar. Here you can remind yourself that you’ll need to make a purchase at a particular time (ex: you know your favorite specialty store has an annual sale every six months).

  • Buy blank or generic items that can be used whenever needed. The best example of this is blank notecards with a neutral theme. Purchase these in bulk to use as thank-you, sympathy or even just “thinking of you” cards. No more overpriced greeting card purchases from the drugstore! You can also keep a couple of gift bags around for this same purpose and some small gifts like candles. Those can be purchased when they go on sale (Target’s Threshold brand comes in really nice giftable sizes). Stash these all away in one place so you can grab whenever the occasion strikes.

Witty Conversation

Do you struggle to find topics for small talk that interest everyone? Don’t get stuck discussing the weather! Here are some topics to get the conversation flowing no matter who you’re talking to.

  • “What was the best part of your day so far?” People love to talk about themselves. This will also usually give you more clues about what to discuss next with them.

  • “Do you have any hobbies you’re really enjoying these days?” Maybe they don’t, but they might have something they’d like to get into. That’s a great jumping-off point.

  • “Any upcoming trips planned?” This is one of my favorites as a frequent traveller. Sometimes I get inspired!

  • “What’s the best meal you’ve had lately?” I like this question because it doesn’t have to be a restaurant recommendation. You might end up with a great new recipe.

  • “Do you have any pets?” I’d ask this question because I have my two cats to discuss even if they don’t have any pets themselves, and I am fine with discussing something else if they aren’t interested in hearing about them (which would be impossible, but you get my drift).

Feel free to call over someone you both know to keep the conversation going. Small talk can be exhausting if there’s no defined end time, and it’s okay to transfer some of the work to someone else. Practice these conversations with a friend to get really good at it before you attend a work party or wedding where you’ll need to do it over and over.

What do you think of these suggestions to help you get it together? Would you like to see more of these in a future post? Let me know in the comments below!

Easy Cleaning

Hi! Have you been trying to get organized when it comes to cleaning? I’ve got some suggestions for you. Let’s talk about some of my absolute favorite cleaning products and how I use them around my home. This is a shorter post so I don’t bore you guys!

Floors

  • S and I recently replaced our robot vacuum and it’s the best thing since sliced bread. This model uses a laser to map out your home into zones. This way, you can tell the robot to just hit one room or all of them. It then returns to its dock to cut any hair off the brush roll and empty itself. I love that I can use the app to tell the robot what to do, monitor its progress and keep track of its battery life. It’s so useful when you’re having company because it can be cleaning the floors while you’re doing something else.

  • I know Swiffers are controversial. But the new Power Mop is the best one they’ve come up with. The little brush fibers really work as well as my old mop without me having to do anything special. There are different solutions you can buy for it. I am partial to the wood one because that’s what the majority of my flooring is. I also have a regular Swiffer that you can use wet or dry. Sometimes i’ll even just attach a paper towel to it and use a spray multipurpose cleaner to hit the bathroom floors really quickly if I have guests coming over unexpectedly.

Kitchen

  • I like to use the multipurpose spray from Trader Joe’s for cleaning the kitchen countertops, cabinets and appliances. It has a lovely cedarwood and sage scent and gets most messes out of the way the first time. As I mentioned earlier, sometimes I’ll use it on the floors too.

  • I have a Scrub Daddy and holder that I only use to clean the sink itself. The scrub daddy can go in the dishwasher and lasts a loooong time, so it’s a worthy investment.

  • Dawn Powerwash spray is the best dish soap I’ve ever used. I find that I need way less of this product than traditional dish soap and it gets even stuck-on messes out. You can also use this product to clean other things like the bathroom and even shoes. You get the sprayer once and then buy refills that click into it.

  • I’ve tried many brands but I keep coming back to Cascade Platinum Plus dishwashing pods. They just work the best and I pretty much never have to re-clean dishes. Consider Jet Dry to go alongside these for clean, dry dishes every time. The bottles are huge and last a long time.

  • So I’m not one of those influencers who has to empty everything into an aesthetically pleasing container, but I do advocate for anything that makes my life easier. For the fridge I love having liners for the drawers and shelves. Just in case you have a sauce bottle that leaks or takeout that jumps out of the container…it’s a lot better to clean a liner than the whole fridge shelf.

  • Viva Signature Cloth paper towels. Fantastic. I try not to use too many but if you need a paper towel, this one is great. It literally performs as well as a regular towel. You can rinse it under water, wring it out and use it some more.

Bathroom

  • The Trader Joe’s spray mentioned earlier is fantastic for bathrooms! I spray it on a microfiber towel and then wipe the mirrors, countertops, shelving and then the toilet (in that order; always go from cleanest to dirtiest). These types of towels are much more sustainable and affordable than using paper towels for everything.

  • I use a toilet bowl cleaner with bleach. The clinging kind is best to make sure any stains (limescale, hard water etc) are removed. Your whole bathroom will smell so fresh! Next, I stamp the toilet with the Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Gel stamps. I’ve found that these really keep the toilet bowl clean. They dispense a small amount of product every time you flush.

  • I’ve started using these foaming shower cleaners. I can make sure I’ve hit every corner of the shower and tub with product, let it sit for a moment, scrub and rinse. Easy peasy!

  • My newest acquisition is this toilet brush from Simple Human. It has a magnetic attachment so the brush won’t just fall over easily, and it’s made so that it scrubs the underside of the toilet rim really well. This brush comes in two colors and has a five-year warranty.

Have you used any of these products before? What are your favorite cleaning products? Let me know in the comments!

Pretty Cozy Fall Feels

Hello again! Now that autumn is upon us, it’s time to give our spaces a cozy refresh. I personally love how trends are moving away from the sterile, grey looks of the 2010s and returning to maximalism. Let’s move from room to room to see how you can personally make your home as cozy as possible this season. We’ll discuss a few options for each area, and as always I’ll link to products you might want to try.

Entryway

When you first walk into your space, what do you want to see? I like this area to be functional but visually pleasing. Using textured fabric bins to organize can be very helpful to avoid clutter. Try these out. It’s also nice to have a mirror here for last-minute checks before you walk out the door. This pleated brass mirror fits with most decor and is a detour from a plain metal frame. Next, why not add a scent? Reed diffusers are a low-maintenance way to give your guests a nice welcome without being overpowering. Try this one; Palo Santo is one of my favorite scents at the moment. Lastly, a rug is key to make sure winter boots don’t make a mess. This one is made of jute so it’s sturdy and will look nice despite getting a beating at your front door.

Living Room

S and I have spent time finding things for our living room that are comfy (and cat-proof) but not frumpy. We made it our mission not to get everything from one store. So you won’t find matchy-matchy pieces in our home, but that’s fine with us. This also makes it easier for us to switch things out if we want a change. One of our favorite recent purchases has been this storage bench. We chose the rich grey color. The velvet is easy to clean (cat hair comes right off and they can’t scratch it up), the golden legs add a little pizzazz, and best of all it’s deep and holds SO much stuff inside. These benches are also great for an entryway if you have the space for one, or even at the end of your bed. Another way to make your living room cozy is to add some string lights in a warm tone. They’re inexpensive and are so beautiful in the evenings. Finally, how about a new throw blanket? They don’t take up much space and can be layered. This one is 100% cotton and comes in such an interesting pattern.

Kitchen

MUGS! You can never have too many mugs. I love the look of these bistro tile mugs from Anthropologie. For some reason art deco just appeals to me. The Chrysler building has always been my favorite skyscraper, and walking around the city in fall is intoxicating. Pour yourself a mug of coffee and daydream about your next adventure. Of course you’ll probably want to have some guests over at some point during the season. Why not upgrade your entertaining essentials? This serving platter is made of marble so it’s sturdy and eye-catching. Did you know you can order ancy foods online for your next party? Try a cheese crate from Williams-Sonoma or an olive oil cake from L’Artusi.

Bathroom

Oh boy, do I love a long bubble bath when it’s crisp outside. I really like the Dr. Teal’s line; they’re super affordable and give you tons of bubbles. You can also splurge a bit on a bubble bath bar from Lush. They come in all sorts of scents and sizes. Beware some of the colored ones; they might stain your tub if you don’t clean it right after your bath is finished. Another great way to upgrade your bathroom is a new stone bath mat. I really like these because they don’t get all mildewy like a fabric bath mat. They dry off instantly and are sturdy, easy to clean and visually appealing. Finish up with a new bath curtain. Try this sage green color for instant fall vibes.

Bedroom

A new duvet is the easy choice. I remember reading in a novel that the character had a duvet UNDER her sheets and that sounded so amazing. Try one of these fluffy inserts from Amazon. Keep in mind you’ll likely have to hit up a laundromat to wash it since they don’t fit in a standard machine. I also like to change over to jersey sheets this time of year. These are organic cotton and come in a variety of colors to fit your current decor. New throw pillows are also easy to add in. Try this large round furry one to add texture. Did you know Target has really cool framed art? Check out this oil painting on their website. They also have some nice decor right now; this vase and these bowl fillers caught my eye.

Which of these upgrades do you want to try for the season? Is there anything else you want to do to make your home cozier for fall? Let me know in the comments!

Easy Health & Wellness

Hello there! In previous posts I discussed some important aspects of wellness like having a dedicated skincare and sleep hygiene routine. As a nurse, it’s vital that I take my personal health seriously. I began to get very interested in health and wellness towards the end of nursing school. I was very overweight and I wondered how I’d be able to effectively do my job when I was already so unhealthy. I decided to start making changes, and I’d like to talk about some of what worked. As always, anything I share on this blog is simply for information. It is not medical advice, I am not your healthcare provider and you should speak with your physician about anything you decide to do health-wise.

Diet

  • Be willing to change. Some people just can’t calorie count. Working with your doctor may allow you to figure out what’s best for you if you’re sincerely interested in improving your health. But it all starts with YOU. If you aren’t ready to make changes you might just end up frustrated or worse off than when you began.

  • It may seem hard to understand since I’ve lost around 100 pounds since I started my fitness journey but…l am not on a diet. I have noticed that any time I’ve tried to restrict certain categories of foods in the past I begin to crave them. I won’t go into the science part of nutrients and macros and things, but you can find plenty of research that’s already been done on these subjects. Basically I can’t live my life without carbs! And I feel life is too short to go without delicious things. What I do is count calories using an app called LoseIt. I've been using this app for about five years and I find it to be so intuitive. I can set a goal weight and how quickly I’d like to reach it (I usually aim for 1-1.5 pounds per week). I can adjust it as needed, which is great for vacation because I still count calories (yes that’s right; no cheat days here) but I change my weight loss goal to “maintenance”. This way I still stay on track without feeling deprived.

  • Rethink your relationship with food. Were you raised during a time period that insisted you clean your plate even if you were full? Maybe it’s time to think differently. Your body is well-equipped to tell you when it’s done taking in nutrients during any particular meal. Listen to it. This takes time, so don’t beat yourself up if you do overeat from time to time. Just remember, you are not a garbage can. You don’t have to eat food just because it’s there or someone offered it to you.

  • Utilize resources. I’ve found some great low-calorie recipes and foods on Pinterest and other social media websites; some have worked out and become staples. An example is an air-fryer pizza recipe I found and have made dozens of times.

Exercise

  • Don't be afraid. Exercise doesn’t have to mean sweating to death at a smelly gym. Think about your daily routine and how you could adjust slightly to move your body more. Do you live in a city with public transit? Maybe you could get off one stop before you need to and walk. Do you take the elevator a few floors at work? Try taking the stairs one way.

  • Increase at a reasonable pace. Though exercise can be addicting, make sure you’re able to continue by avoiding injury or burnout. Personally, I will never wake up at 5AM to exercise but I am happy to walk 5 miles in a day. I didn’t start out doing that. I started by walking a bit more whenever I could. Remember the suggestion to get off one stop early? Maybe start doing that just once a week and then gradually increase as you feel comfortable.

  • Start at home. This is the way to be consistent; don’t make it such a chore that you never want to exercise. How about just trying a workout video on YouTube? I also subscribe to Apple Fitness+ for workouts I can do anywhere, anytime. You can do them in as little as five minutes without leaving the house. Remember to take time to stretch a bit too.

  • Get cute outfits and accessories. These don't have to be expensive. Old Navy and Target frequently have great sales on their athletic wear (I’m talking 50% off!) and you can get a really nice water bottle and set of headbands on Amazon for a good price. I feel way more motivated to exercise if I have cute stuff to do it in.

Wellness Checks

  • Annual physical exam. Are you afraid of the doctor? There’s no need to be. I find that nowadays doctors are much more interested in preventative medicine, meaning it’s a lot easier to identify and solve potential health problems early rather than have to manage a chronic illness down the line. One way to do so is your annual physical exam. Your doctor will have your baseline data from last year so they can identify any changes (good or concerning). I use Tia clinic which is a holistic women’s healthcare group. They make it easy to schedule everything online and they offer virtual and in-person appointments.

  • Eye health. When’s the last time you saw an optometrist? Did you know your prescription can still change as you get older? If you haven’t been in awhile it’s a good idea to book this appointment too.

  • Dental checkups. You should be brushing and flossing daily (check my previous post on my nightly routine to see what products I use). But going every six months for a thorough cleaning is equally important. You only get one set of these “luxury bones”, so treat them with respect.

  • It’s okay to go to urgent care. Even though I have a primary physician, every now and then I visit my local urgent care for things like Covid or a suspected sprain. They're popping up everywhere now, so learn where your nearest one is just in case you need it. A lot of insurance plans cover it with a copay that’s only slightly higher than your regular doctor’s office visit.

  • Mental health. Check with your insurance benefits, because you may be eligible for talk therapy. I’ve found this to be very helpful; not everyone needs it (and not everyone needs it long-term) but it might be something you need to help you process certain life events.

  • How are you feeling right now? Take time to check in with yourself. This might be in the form of a journal or even just a quick breathing session. Take your pulse from time to time too. If you know your baseline it may make it easier to tell when something isn’t quite right.

  • Go outside. This could be linked with exercise ideas. Try to find opportunities to experience fresh air and a bit of nature. Even if you don’t live somewhere with a lot of green space, make a point to take at least a short walk as often as you can. This can often help you reset your thoughts if you've been feeling anxious.

  • Spend time with friends. Laughter really is the best medicine. One of life’s great privileges is being able to hang out with people who really get you. It is also very special to have people support you if you’re embarking on a health and wellness journey.

If you’ve made it this far, which of these suggestions would you like to try?

Come Fly With Me!

Have you been wishing your trips could be a bit fancier, yet still easy? Then you’re definitely in the right place. I have always had a love of travel, and one thing that’s made it more enjoyable recently is having a solid routine. Let’s talk about it!

Planning

I’ll dive much deeper in a future post, but basically I begin by checking Pinterest (yes, really!). It’s so easy to make a board for your travel destination. Then as you come up with ideas (sightseeing, restaurants, transit) you have a quick place to organize them. Wanderlog is another fabulous resource for longer trips. You can use the app or website, and plug in all reservations, points of interest and things you want to research further. If you are going with a group, it tallies expenses to make them easier to split. Wanderlog even gives you an email address to forward things to (like the aforementioned reservations) so you can keep them together.

Things to Remember

  • Stop your mail! Do this on the USPS website. They’ll either deliver all of it in one chunk when you get back or you can go the nearest post office to pick it up.

  • House keys- do you need an extra set? Use a KeyMe kiosk to make one for your house or pet sitter. Note: some keys can be copied on the spot. Other must be shipped (takes 3-5 business days) so plan accordingly!

  • Do a Big Clean. It’s nice to come home to a fresh, clean house. Pro tip: take out your garbage, clean out your fridge and put on a fresh set of sheets before you go.

  • Be safe: don’t post on social media until you get back to avoid being a target for thieves. But you should tell someone you’re leaving your home unoccupied- whether it’s the superintendent of your building or a trusted friend, make sure someone is keeping an eye on the place in case of something like a burst pipe.

    Packing

  • Make detailed packing checklists and save them on your phone. I have them for various types of trips like ‘Long Weekend-Fall’ or ‘Overseas Trip >1 week’.

  • Take a photo of the contents of your suitcase. If you end up needing insurance reimbursement this will make quick work of the claim.

  • Apple AirTag or Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag. These help you keep track of your luggage if you happen to check it or leave it behind at your hotel while out sightseeing. The battery lasts ages and it connects to your smartphone.

  • Away Luggage is my absolute favorite brand. They’re so thoughtful with details like built-in compression panels and laundry bags. Try to visit one of their retail locations if you can; they’re always willing to show you the features of the suitcases and overnight bags (I have the Weekender and it’s so good for short trips).

  • Vacuum bags save space for longer trips (bring home more souvenirs!). Avoid rolling and squeezing by buying these that have a tiny electric vacuum attachment.

    Airport

  • Invest in TSA Precheck/Global Entry. On a recent trip to Chicago we made it through security in less than five minutes. At busier airports, this can mean the difference between making your flight and…not.

  • Lounge Access. This revolutionized travel for me. Click the link to see a list of different lounges that you could access at various airports with Priority Pass. We get access to all of these and the Centurion lounges using American Express Platinum. Chase Sapphire Reserve is another option to get these types of perks. In the lounge, you’ll find spotless bathrooms, free WiFi, free food and drinks (including alcohol) and plenty of places to sit and unwind.

  • Check your airline app frequently and enable notifications. Gate changes can sneak up on you. Once you arrive at the gate, politely sidle up to the desk and ask about free upgrades.

    On the Plane

I don’t like to take too much out for fear of losing it when it’s time to deplane. So I have a little pouch where I can keep my AirPods, lip balm, Aesop Ginger Flight Therapy (an essential oil roll-on that keeps me calm on the flight, and is good if you have a bit of upset stomach) and gum. I also like to use a nasal sanitizer just in case someone sitting near me appears to be ill.

    What Should You Wear?

I’m partial to a wide-legged yoga pant, comfy top (don’t worry, this option isn’t as cropped as it looks) and a long cardigan or trench coat. I also wear compression socks on any flights longer than a couple of hours to help with circulation and reduce the possibility of a blood clot. Be sure to get up and stretch and move. For shoes, wear your heaviest pair that you’re bringing along. I’m partial to Doc Martens.

    Passing the Time

  • Download library books via Libby ahead of time. You can search multiple libraries with this app and shoot books right to your phone as ePub or Kindle books. Pro tip: NYC residents get free access to NYPL, Queens and Brooklyn’s public libraries. For longer trips I like to pick a book series to get into (last time I read all the Little House on the Prairie books).

  • Get WiFi. TMobile offers 4 free full-flight sessions per year or unlimited 1-hour sessions. For flights that are around 2 hours, I just wait until about a half hour after the WiFi is available to log in. Then you basically get it for the whole flight until they turn it off. Use the longer sessions for long flights. Don’t have TMobile? Check with your carrier to see if they offer something similar to this offer.

  • Reflect. For at least a little bit, turn off your phone and close your eyes. Think about what’s been bothering you, what’s been making you happy and what you’d like to do next with your life. You have quiet time so why not use it!

What do you do when you fly? Which of these suggestions stood out to you? Tell me in the comments below!

What’s In My Bag?

Hi there! Today as I packed my backpack for another shift as a school nurse, I thought about the daily essentials I carry. I think a lot of these items are handy for anyone regardless of their profession, and can help you stay fancy on the go! Let’s dive in.

Cosmetics

I try not to bring too much with me as I use public transportation and bags can get heavy FAST. So I stick with basics.

  • Native deodorant comes in the tiniest mini I’ve ever seen, fits in any bag and doesn’t interfere with your perfume or cologne. It’s aluminum free but works very well in my opinion.

  • Aesop Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol has become a favorite over this past summer. It’s great for a midday refresh when you’re spending time outside or have had a long day. You can even store it in the fridge for a burst of cool mist.

  • Rare Beauty Find Comfort Hydrating Hand Cream is just excellent. The container is small and the lid is attached (twist gently to open) so you don’t have to worry about it making a mess in your bag. The formula is non-greasy with a light scent.

  • Elf Lip Lacquer in Clear. It’s $3, not sticky or goopy and goes with everything. For this price, buy multiples to have in every bag.

  • Trader Joe’s Hand Sanitizer Of course any hand sanitizer will do. I just like that this one is a strong spray rather than a gel, and only costs $1.99. Comes in multiple scents.

  • Hand Soap Sheets. There’s nothing worse than getting to a public restroom and finding that there is zero soap. These little containers are a lifesaver in those instances and good for travel too. Keep some in your car to use with a water bottle for rinsing!

  • Goodwipes are great to keep you fresh on the go. I like the personal care flushable wipes and the larger body wipes. All come individually wrapped for convenience.

    Tech

  • Anker Wireless Charging Bank. This is slim, lightweight and holds a charge for..e…ver. You can charge wirelessly or via USB-C. Anker has a reputation for solid products and I’ve always found them to be reliable and well-built.

  • Long Charging Cord and Wall Charging Block. I work at different sites, so I never know if an outlet is close by. This saves me from having to charge my phone via computer.

  • iPad Pro and Apple Pencil are great for life admin on the go (blogging, anyone?). I like using the Goodnotes app to take notes or make my calendar. You can link it to your laptop and phone to edit and view it anywhere.

  • AirPods Pro 2. The noise cancellation is a must for phone calls in noisy areas or even just carving out a quiet space wherever you are.

  • Self-Inking Stamp if you do a lot of paperwork. This has saved my wrists, and you can get anything on it- your title, an address, maybe even just your name.

  • Gel Pens. I recently bought these and they’re amazing. Stylish, comfy to hold and quick-drying. You could even give them as a gift because they come in a nice box.

  • Hand Warmer or Misting Fan depending on the the season. The hand warmer also functions as a power bank, and the fan can fold at a 90 degree angle and be set on a desk.

  • Fellow 16 oz Carter Move Travel Mug is a real workhorse. Keeps drinks piping hot (or cold) all day and even has a splash guard so you don’t make a mess when you’re driving.

  • Simple Modern 40oz tumbler. I have this in the Cream Leopard color and my goal is to drink 3 per day to stay hydrated. It’s much easier to do so with the included straw (you actually get two). This also goes in the dishwasher. Use this ice ring mold if you like your water on the cold side.

  • Baggu Tote Bags live in all of my bags. They wash easily and hold a lot, yet fold down very small. Great to avoid bag fees if you end up on an impromptu shopping trip.

  • Mini Umbrella. I always have one with me. It might not get you through a typhoon but you will be able to get home without being absolutely soaked.

    What Is My Bag?

For work, I switch between two different ones.

  • Fjallraven Kanken backpack in black. This is small but fits everything. It’s easy to wipe clean and has padding for your back. Once I even sat on it when I didn’t have a chair! Pro tip: get the shoulder pads to make the straps more comfortable.

  • Marc Jacobs The Tote Bag has dozens of colors, materials and sizes. It fits a lot and I like the messenger style to be hands-free. It’s a lot easier to get over a large down coat in winter too.

Have you used any of these products before? What do you carry in your bag every day? Let me know in the comments below!

Pretty Skin

Hi there! Today I wanted to talk to you about one of my favorite things- skincare! I’m actually really into it since I’ve reached my thirties, and I feel that it’s made a big difference in my self-confidence. I also don’t really need much makeup and I can leave the house fairly quickly, so I consider prioritizing skincare to be a win-win. Let’s dive in and discuss the different things I do for my skin.

Cleansing

I use different cleansers depending on what I’ve got going on. If I wore makeup, I use Banila CO Clean it Zero Original Cleansing Balm. I take a pea sized amount and apply to my face, then add water. Next, I add E.L.F. Holy Hydration! Daily Cleanser, which has become my absolute favorite. It’s cheap, I can find it in-store and online, and cleans my face very well without leaving it dry or tight. A couple of times a week I use Lush Happy Skin Enzymic Facial Exfoliator. It’s very finely grained and doesn’t feel like it’s scratching my skin. I also use this under my arms to remove deodorant residue.

Toning

I’m a simple girl when it comes to toner. I switch between E.L.F. Pure Skin Toner and Thayer’s Coconut Water Witch Hazel Toner. Both are very gentle on my skin and help me feel totally clean. I put these on a cotton pad and swipe on my face.

Moisturizer

I’ve mentioned this product before, but I use my Aesop Lightweight Facial Hydrating Serum every single day. I’ve gotten more compliments on my skin since I started using this than ever before. I think I’m on my third or fourth bottle. It is an investment but I’ve yet to find another moisturizer that my skin likes this much. It literally drinks it.

Sunscreen

Do NOT skip sunscreen. Use it every single week. I’ve used several and now my favorite is actually….Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40! It’s a clear gel that mixes very well with the products I mentioned above. Also, it’s cheap and easy to find. If you do not have a Trader Joe’s near you, Glossier’s Invisible Shield Priming Sunscreen is another clear gel that doesn’t leave any sort of cast and is available online.

Sheet Masks

These are basically just an extra moisture boost. I bought this set from Facetory; they have a great assortment and some even include a bonus ampoule of serum that you can slather on before the mask. When using these I will tone but skip the moisturizer.

Eye Patches

I’ve recently become obsessed with eye patches; they soothe and hydrate the undereye area. Don’t expect a miracle, but they feel nice while you’re sipping your morning coffee. Try these from Amazon.

What’s your skincare routine? Is there anything I should add to mine? Let me know in the comments!

Pretty Easy Saving

Hi! Today I wanted to talk about one of my absolute favorite things- finding deals! My friends are always in awe of my ability to save money. I’d like to let you in on a little secret…it’s not hard at all. In this post we’ll discuss six easy ways to cut costs while still enjoying the fancier things.

I’ve been using Rakuten for years. It’s really easy to get set up, and if you sign up with a friend you can both get referral bonuses (usually around $30!). This website is used to give you cash back on things you normally do, including online and in-store shopping and dining. Lots of people know about the online part but the in-store and dining part is my secret favorite. You link your credit card and forget about it! Rakuten saves up your cash back and gives it to you via PayPal or check. You can also create a browser extension so you don’t miss any savings.

  • Check for apps and loyalty programs

Back in the day, only smaller restaurants and coffee shops (sometimes nail salons) would have a little punch card that you’d have to remember to bring with you to accumulate enough visits to get something free after awhile. Now, a lot of restaurants and stores have their own apps or other programs. One that I’ve enjoyed using is InKind. They’re partnered with thousands of restaurants, and you pay using their app to get huge discounts. The first time we tried it we saved $50! It doesn’t take long to sign up, and now I’m in the habit of logging onto the app every time we go out to eat to see if the restaurant is on there. Most fast food restaurants and chain stores also have some sort of app that will give you an immediate discount and then other coupons multiple times per year.

  • Attend loyalty events

Pay attention to the emails you get from brands, especially if you live in a big city. Often you will get invites to sample sales or other exclusive events. Here you may even score free snacks and drinks in addition to discounts on what you buy. One of my favorite brands, Aesop, has invited me to several of these events and they give out free full-size items. Therefore I save even more money by attending!

  • Private browsing

Switch to private browsing mode and then search google for a discount code. This will eliminate any chance that the ‘cookies’ on your usual browser are preventing you from getting the best deal.

  • Follow brands on social media

Lately I’ve noticed that many brands will post one-off coupon codes and deals on their social media and nowhere else. Give them a follow to see what you find! If that doesn’t work, you can also contact them via DM to see if they might have a code for you.

  • Google Insights

This one has been amazing! It’s a bit invasive, I’m not going to lie. You allow Google to basically see what you’re doing on your browsers (stroooongly suspect they’re doing this anyway) and they pay you for the privilege. You can cash out at various intervals and redeem for gift cards. I’ve made a good amount of money and I use my earnings to buy silly things on Amazon.

Have you tried any of these cost-saving measures? How did they work out for you? Let me know in the comments!

Nightly Routine

Hi there! Today I wanted to talk about something we all have- a nightly routine. For some, this is just turning out the lights and belly-flopping into bed. For others, there’s a little more involved. Personally, I’ve elevated my nightly routine over the years and I think I’ve come to a conclusion: short and simple is the way to go. Let’s dive in.

  1. Supplements

Of course, you’ll want to speak to your doctor before beginning any supplement regimen. Anything I discuss on this blog is what I personally take, but it may not be what’s best for you and does not constitute medical advice. I like to take magnesium gummies to help me calm my mind and body. The magnesium also comes in a powder form which you can use to make a “Sleepy Girl Mocktail” to wind down with. I was too lazy to keep that up, so I felt the gummies worked best. I have also occasionally used a melatonin supplement if I wake up in the middle of the night. I like this because you can keep it in your bedside drawer and you won’t need a glass of water to take it.

  2. Oral Hygiene

What does this involve? I’ve tried many different kinds of flosses and I keep coming back to Cocofloss. This floss is the absolute best. It comes in multiple flavors, has a nice sturdy case and doesn’t shred on me. I find that the coconut flavor is my favorite and doesn’t interfere with whatever toothpaste and mouthwash I’m using. I also really like Aesop’s mouthwash. Yes it’s a splurge at $25, but it tastes incredible. You can also get a trial size in store and refill it for travel. Finally, my toothbrush is the Oral-B Braun. You can save on refillable heads by purchasing generics on Amazon. The brush links to an app that helps you know you’re brushing correctly and even tells you when it’s time to replace the head.

  3. Face Care

Now it’s time to care for your skin. My favorite overnight mask is Aesop’s Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque. It has a delightful consistency and can also be used when flying as it doesn’t need rinsing. Sometimes I even use it as my morning moisturizer if I feel my skin has been a bit dry. Next, I apply Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus+ Neck & Chest Cream. This has SPF so it could also be used during the daytime. I should probably use an eye cream, but haven’t found one I’m that interested in yet. That’ll be fodder for a later blog! For my lips, I slather on (and I do mean SLATHER) Vaseline All-Over Body Balm Jelly Stick. The link will show you options on where to buy; I bought mine on Amazon and recently spotted it at Target. This is way less messy than the Vaseline tubs we grew up with and is really comfortable to apply. I have not had any issue with dry, cracked lips since I began using this.

  4. Hands

Here comes the fun part! I like to go back to Aesop for their Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm. It comes in a pretty pink tube and is soft without being greasy. After applying generously on my hands, I use a cuticle oil on my fingers. There’s no need to spend a lot on this; the product I linked is from Amazon and you get several pens which you can put in your purse, car and desk.

  5. Mindfulness, Peace and Quiet

Now it’s time to unwind and relax. Try to identify what might be keeping you from getting your best night’s sleep- do you have too many devices to distract you? Room too hot? Wrong pajamas? Address these issues and you’ll find yourself drifting off very quickly. And once you create your own bespoke nightly routine, your body will start getting prepared as soon as you begin it each night.

Thanks for reading! Let me know in the comments- have you tried any of these products? What is your current nightly routine?

Introducing… Me!

Let me introduce myself!

Hi there! It’s really nice to meet you here in my new space. As you may have seen on my homepage, I’m a thirtysomething nurse based in NYC. I created this page to share my insights and show you the fun and adventures you can have without too much hassle or money spent. I’ve been living in NYC for many years, but I’m originally from the Midwest. My husband S and I love to travel, eat, and spend time with our two mildly obnoxious cats Monkey and Oliver (Ollie for short). You’ll get to meet them and see the life we’ve carved out for ourselves here.

I work part time and volunteer. These two endeavors take me all over the city, so I get a chance to really do some cool things. I get a thrill from finding little hacks that I can share with my friends. If something catches your eye during the course of your time on my site and you’d like to know more, please drop me a comment.

On this page, I’ll be doing the following on a regular basis:

  • What’s in my bag (I’m the 'mom’ friend who carries everything)

  • How to plan the perfect vacation with a minimum of stress and expense

  • Maximize the benefits available to you (credit card, transit, sales)

  • My daily routine (always pretty, easy and fancy)

  • Shop my closet

  • What I ate (interesting bars and restaurants around various cities…Germany is coming up very soon!)

  • Mens’ Corner (how to shop for the guys you know)

  • My Cats (yes, I’m a crazy cat lady. I really can’t apologize)

I’m so glad you’re here. Leave me a comment below and tell me which of these posts you’re most excited about!
