Pretty Jeans
Hi there! Are you in the market for a new pair of jeans? Interested in trying some of the newer styles on the market? Read on for denim inspiration…
What’s Your Style?
If you’re a woman of a certain age like myself, you’ve probably lived through a few different denim trends. Low-rise jeans were very in style when I was in high school and they just didn’t work for my body type. I’ve discovered that with a smaller waist-to-hip ratio I look a lot better in high-waisted styles. If you have more of an athletic build, you may find straight or wide-legged jeans to be flattering. How about apple shapes? Look into bootcut or flared jeans.
Women’s clothing can be frustrating since sizing isn’t completely standard. To discover which pairs look best on your body, take a day and go try on multiple pairs. I like to do this in spring or summer because I can just wear a loose sundress that’s easy to change in and out of. Take photos in the dressing room and crowdsource opinions with your friends. Once you have a general idea of the style you like, try it on at different stores. It also helps to take your measurements if you need to shop online instead. Find the ‘size chart’ and then filter the site by the size that is closest to your measurements. Some sites even allow you to change the look of the model to one that looks more like you!
Where to Find Them
Low-Rise Jeans are my old nemesis, but I won’t judge if that’s what you’re looking for. Try a wide-legged pair to update this look, and pair with a fitted top or bodysuit like these. Add a pair of chic flats and a blazer to take the outfit from day to night.
High-Waisted jeans can be incredibly flattering (avoid if you are short waisted or very petite; they could make your legs look shorter). Look for pairs listed as ‘mom jeans’ for more options, like these. These usually skew a bit more casual. Pair them with some classic Chuck Taylors and a red lip.
Interested in trying a straight style? Try these. They have built in shaping technology and a gap-proof waistband. I’d add some adorable Chelsea boots and a crisp white button down.
Lastly, let’s talk about bootcut and flared styles. These vary in width depending on the look you’re going for. How about this pair of kick flare jeans. They’re a great way to ease into this style. Try flats with these to leave the attention on the fun hem.
How to Save
Looking for a good deal on denim? My favorite trick is to use Rakuten. Type in exactly what you’re looking for (ex: women’s jeans) and the website will tell you where to get additional discounts that you can stack with any sales from the store.
Sign up for promotional emails, particularly during certain sale periods. You’ll get first crack at inventory when prices drop.
Add items to your cart online but don’t buy them right away. Sometimes this strategy will prompt the company to send you an email offering a discount (be sure to have signed up for emails first so they have your contact information).
Buy pre-owned. If you want a specific style of jean and you know how it fits already, try getting a gently used pair. On thredup.com I typed in ‘women’s jeans’ and found pairs going for as low as $5! Great for purchasing backup pairs.
Swap with friends! This is a fun way to refresh your wardrobe. See if any friends wear the same size and have them over to trade pairs you’re not wearing anymore for ones you might.
